Surgical robot “Da Vinci”
In 2018, a robot called “Darwin” appeared in the medical drama “Black Forceps” aired on the TBS series. What surprised me was that the “Da Vinci Surgical System” robot used in actual surgery was used.
The appearance of genius surgeon Seijiro Watami sitting on the surgeon’s console (so to speak, the cockpit) looked like a real surgeon.
The “Da Vinci Surgical System” surgical assistance robot was developed by Intuitive Surgical in the United States and began to be marketed in 1999. The name is, of course, named after Leonardo da Vinci, a genius of the Renaissance who has extensive knowledge of anatomy.
Robotic surgery is a form of endoscopic surgery. A robot arm holds a “forceps”, and a human controls it to perform endoscopic surgery. Of course, it’s a robot arm that has a camera.
“Robotic surgery” is often misunderstood as “a surgical robot equipped with AI (artificial intelligence) that automatically performs surgery”, but it is not. The forceps are moved by a robotic arm, and it is a human being who operates them. Therefore, to be precise, it is called “robot-assisted surgery”. This means that the robot will assist the surgeon.
Advantages of robotic surgery
There are various advantages. Since the grippers have joints, you can move with great freedom deep inside your body. Since it can be used in a seated position, operator fatigue is slight.
By viewing 3D images, you can get a field of view close to the naked eye. The fact is that it is easy to perform detailed operations with the “motion scale” which reduces the width of the movement, such as moving the hand 5 centimeters to move the robot arm 1 centimeter.
In Japan, insurance was first applied to prostate cancer surgery in 2012.
