I took a Nankai Ferry with Visa’s touch payment. Automatic discounts when connecting to Nankai Electric Railway! –Travel Watch

Nankai Ferry, which operates a ferry connecting Wakayama Port and Tokushima Port, launched a demo experience on March 25, which lets you board with Visa’s touch payment.

Nankai Electric Railway (Nankai Electric Railway), Nankai Ferry, Sumitomo Mitsui Card, QUADRAC and Visa Worldwide Japan launched Visa’s touch payment demo experience at Wakayama Port and Tokushima Port from March 25. This is the first time in Japan that Visa’s touch payment can be used to pay the fare and board the ship.

The onboarding flow using Visa’s touch payment is as follows. Visa’s touch payment reader is installed at ticket gates for walk-in boarding at Wakayama Port and Tokushima Port of Nankai Ferry. Passengers can pay for fares and board by simply tapping the reader at the gate with a credit card that supports Visa’s touch payment at the time of boarding. You can only touch your credit card when boarding the ship and you do not need to touch it when disembarking.

Currently, the only credit cards that can be used are cards compatible with Visa touch payment. You can also use Apple Pay or Google Pay-powered smartphones that have a credit card on file and Visa touch payments available.

In addition, alongside this demonstration experience, an automated gate supporting Visa’s touch payment will be installed at Nankai Electric Railway Wakayamako Station, which is directly connected to the Nankai Ferry Platform at Wakayama Port. We have also introduced a fare-linked system that automatically applies discounted tickets when connecting both Nankai Electric Railway and Nankai Ferry with Visa’s touch payment. This is the first time in the world that a fare-related mechanism (in this case, the automatic application of discounted tickets) will be introduced when connecting multiple transport companies with Visa’s touch payment.

In addition, Visa’s touch payment can only be used by foot passengers and does not support car or motorcycle passengers. It is said to be because the fare is complicated for car or motorcycle boarding, and this time it is a demonstration experience, so it seems that it started with foot passengers first.

The demo experience is scheduled to run until December 11. Meanwhile, Nankai Electric Railway’s demonstration experiment was originally scheduled for December 12, 2021, but the period will be extended by about a year and continue until December 11.

A card reader has been installed at the boarding gate, and it is now possible to board with Visa’s touch payment.

At Nankai Electric Railway Wakayamako Station, which is directly connected to Wakayama Port’s Nankai Ferry Platform, Visa automatic gates that support touch payment will be installed at the start of the Nankai Ferry demo experience.

The automatic gates installed are the same as those installed at Namba stations, etc.

Approximately 3 months until introduction by combining existing systems

So far, Nankai Ferry has been able to handle credit card payments at manned counters, but due to issues such as introduction costs and operating costs, it has not been possible to support transport smart cards. Additionally, the Nankai Ferry platform is directly connected to Wakayamako Station on the Nankai Electric Railway, and although you can board the ship directly from Wakayamako Station through the connecting passage, only cash vending machines are installed in the connecting passage. Therefore, if I really wanted to buy a cashless ticket, I had no choice but to go to a guarded window away from the connecting passage. Similarly, at the port of Tokushima, it was basically necessary to buy tickets at an inhabited window.

However, the guarded window is often crowded, and it seems that it is not uncommon to have to wait a long time before buying a ticket. Therefore, it seems that there have been many requests for boarding using transport smart cards etc., which has become a big problem.

Under such circumstances, Nankai Electric Railway launched a demo experience of ticketing entry and exit using Visa’s touch payment and QR code from April 3, 2021. Then it was invited to participate in the demo experience with Nankai Ferry, a group company. Nankai Ferry was also pursuing cashless support, the introduction cost is extremely cheaper than transport smart cards, and Nankai Electric Railway is also conducting demonstration experiments, and it is said to be a mechanism coherent. conducted a demo experiment in December 2021 and started work for its introduction.

The payment system used in this demonstration experiment is “Q-move” developed by QUADRAC, which is exactly the same as the payment system used in the Nankai Electric Railway demonstration experiment. Nankai Ferry is said to have taken measures such as attaching a cover to the map reader considering the influence of wind and rain near the sea, but the system itself has hardly changed from that used by Nankai Electric Railway. Also, since Q-move is centrally managed in the cloud, internet connection is a must when using it, but since internet connection was not maintained at Nankai Ferry boarding gate, we used the LTE communication network. it is connected to the cloud payment system.

In this way, by using the existing payment system and using the LTE communication network for the Internet connection, it can be introduced inexpensively and in a short period of time of about 3 months without major renovation of the system or equipment renovation.

“Smart lover” who automatically makes discounts when connecting to Nankai Electric Railway

The new Q-move side bracket is the world’s first transfer-time fare interlock. In this demo experience at Nankai Ferry, a transit discount ticket “Smart Favorite Ticket” will be prepared in collaboration with Nankai Electric Railway, and this discount ticket will be automatically applied at the time of transit.

The smart favorite ticket is a reduction ticket with the same content as the “favourite ticket” prepared in the form of a paper reduction ticket. In addition to the Nankai Electric Railway fare, a Nankai Ferry fare of 2200 yen is required for normal connections, but if you transfer between Nankai Electric Railway and Nankai Ferry using Visa’s touch payment with the same credit card, smart lovers will be automatic. will be applied and the fare for all sections will be 2200 yen. In other words, the Nankai Electric Railway fare is reduced.

This is when entry/exit using Visa’s touch payment at Nankai Electric Railway’s Wakayamako Station and boarding using Visa’s touch payment at Nankai Ferry are checked on the cloud side, and both are performed on the same day. Smart Lovers will automatically be applied.

Of course, it is necessary for both parties to use Visa’s touch payment with the same credit card, but I find it very convenient that it is applied automatically without buying tickets or performing procedures in advance.

And it seems that this fare link can also be achieved without major system renovation, and this is a benefit because Nankai Electric Railway and Nankai Ferry have adopted Q-move, which is a cloud-based payment system.

In addition to supporting Visa’s touch payments on routes departing from Japan, we have also introduced a fare-linked mechanism that automatically applies the “Smart Favorite Ticket” discount ticket by connecting Nankai Electric Railway and Nankai Ferry.

If you transfer between Nankai Electric Railway and Nankai Ferry with Visa’s touch payment with the same credit card, Nankai Electric Railway’s fare will automatically be reduced in this way.

This time, Nankai Ferry has introduced a boarding mechanism using Visa’s touch payment, but above all, it is a demonstration experience, whether it will lead to improved passenger convenience and whether the system will work smoothly. . this.

In particular, he wants to pay special attention to the possibility of guiding passengers smoothly by adding Visa’s touch payment boarding to the place where the boarding gate has been used with paper tickets. Looking at passengers boarding with Visa’s touch payment on the early morning flight on March 25, it appears the response was a few seconds slower than passengers boarding with a paper ticket.

In the Q-move system, Visa’s touch payment reading speed is 500ms or less, so it took longer in total, like taking out the card by touch, rather than taking time when touching. I actually boarded the ship with a twist, but the playback speed was quite fast.

At the same time, in the demo experiment, it is a touch only at the time of boarding, but it is said to also take into account the passenger guiding speed, so looking at the results of demonstration experience in the future, during busy seasons, etc. However, he wanted to think about how to react so that passengers could be guided quickly.
